Complaint: Emergency help for Maria Sprachmann
I Gerald Sprachmann file this serious complaint on behalf of my mother Maria Sprachmann, born on 10th March 1938 in Klagenfurt Austria, regarding the emergency help in the OLVG.
On the 2nd of December around 2 pm, my mother had an insupportable pain in the lower back and stomach and I asked an emergency doctor to check her at home.
The emergency doctor called the ambulance that brought us to the OLVG at around 3 pm.
The emergency treatment of the OLVG help was to the outmost unacceptable. After waiting for two hours with strong pain Dr. Leijdesdorff had a look at the patient (Maria Sprachmann). He ONLY performed an assessment with his hands, no blood samples, CT, X-rays, or any other medical examination was performed. During the medical assessment of Dr. Leijdesdoff, Maria Sprachmann indicated several times strong pain in her lower back, front of the belly (very strong on the left side), pain in left femur and also a numb feeling in her left foot.
After the medical examination Dr. Leijdesdorff came to following conclusion:
“The pain is most likely caused by a Hernia and is to be treated by strong pain killers”.
As my mother was under strong pain and almost unable to walk I asked Dr. Leijdesdorff to intern her in the hospital and to have a serious medical examination to identify the cause of the pain. I further asked him to discuss the situation of my mother with an Austrian ambulance service that I requested to bring my mother back to Austria.
Dr. Leijdesdorff refused to make a more detailed medical check-up with the argument that it is not an emergency and later he refused to my request of speaking with the Austrian ambulance service with the argument that he can’t give a “Diagnose”. When I asked how he then can send her home if he can’t make a “Diagnose” he answered that this is not an emergency and a treatment with pain killers will solve the problem.
Unsatisfied with the treatment we had to leave the hospital around 9 pm.
The night from the 2nd to 3rd January 2010 was terribly painful for Maria Sprachmann. She got weaker, dizzy, and suffered from nausea. She couldn’t take the medication anymore because she needed to vomit after any intake of water of food.
At 2 pm of 3rd January I decided to call the emergency doctor again. The emergency doctor immediately indicated a serious mistake in the 1st “Diagnose” and sent Maria Sprachmann back to the OLVG emergency care. There it was identified that Maria Sprachmann had life threatening internal bleedings.
The irresponsible intervention of Dr. Leijdesdorff seriously threatened the life of my mother, caused her terrible pain, stress to the family and financial damage. He even refused to my request for a proper examination and to intern my mother in the OLVG. This irresponsible behaviour of Dr. Leijdesdorff is not acceptable and I strongly request to take disciplinary actions against him and be informed of the measures taken.
Please do not hesitate to contact me in case you need further information about this unfortunate incident.
Looking forward to hear from you at your earliest convenience.
Kindest regards,
Dr. Gerald Sprachmann
